Arnold (Arnie) Monke
MONKE, ARNOLD DEAN, age 80, died Wednesday, June 14, 2017 in Garrison, MN, peacefully, with his mate in love and life, Karen Hillger at his side. He was born July 9, 1936 in Pipestone (hottest month in Minnesota history - no wonder he was a little off-center). He is survived by Karen; his son, Alan; Karen’s children, Kathy, Eric (Lisa), and Chris Hillger; his grandchildren: Meredith (and the four great grandkids), Aaron and Nolan Monke plus Kyle and Kelsey Rehome, Josh (Emma) Cook, Amanda Underwood and Jacob Hillger. Also his siblings: Wayne (Donna) Monke, Earline Johnson, Cloyce Berreau, and Larry (Judy Hanson) Monke.
After graduating Pipestone High and touring through Germany with Uncle Sam, Arnie worked for the airlines (anybody remember Capitol Airlines???) and then started Northstar International Air Freight at the airport, consolidating freight from manufacturers and sending to destinations around the globe. Arnie and Karen retired to Garrison in 2000 and immediately became snowbirds, migrating to Apache Junction, AZ every winter since. This guy loved life and life loved him back. He was thoughtful, generous,witty, intelligent - found the humor in everything and everybody. A good friend, a faithful and supporting mate, a concerned and caring grandpa and brother. All who knew him were better for it. He will be truly missed.
There will be a “Going Away Party” for Arnie at JJs Nest on Hiway 18 a mile north of Garrison on Tuesday, June 20th, 4:30 to 8:30 pm. Arnie’s buying one last round! There will be a second “Arnie” celebration on Thursday, June 29th in the Twin Cities at the American Legion Post #435, 6501 Portland Avenue, Richfield, MN, from 5-9PM.
