Obituary for Robert Carlson
Robert Bernard Carlson, age 87, of Nisswa, passed away on Friday, September 1, 2017 due to his battle with cancer at Essentia – St. Joseph’s Medical Center. Bob was born on April 14, 1930 in Titonka, Iowa to Axel & Hilma (Johnson) Carlson.
Bob was raised on a farm near Titonka, Iowa, where he graduated from High School. He joined the US Army and spent most of his time in Austria. He met Mary Jean Helmers just before his discharge, they were married on August 7, 1955, they have 2 sons, Robert and Roger, born in Algona, Iowa. In 1961 they moved to Brainerd, where Bob ran a gas station with auto work for 3 years. Bob then worked for the United Parcel Service as a mechanic until he retired. Bob and Mary Jean had one daughter, Julie Ann, born with a form of cerebral palsy in 1971, and passed away in 1979. Bob and Mary Jean built a home on Lake Edward and have lived there for 30 years. Bob had beat cancer two types of cancer up until now.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 62 years, Mary Jean; sons: Robert of Nisswa and Roger (Cindy) of Brainerd; grandchildren: Robert (Jasmine), James (Ashley), Andrew, Kelsey and Joshua; great grandchildren: Calvin, Ruby, Eli, Gabriel, Cordelia, Theodore and Eleanor; sisters: Carol Carlson of Burt, Iowa and Mary Menke of Ledyard, Iowa; brothers: Paul (Dorothy) Carlson of Algona, Iowa and Norman (Mary) Carlson of Clarion, Iowa.
He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Julie Ann; brothers: Raymond, Ralph, John and Philip.
Funeral Service for Bob will be held Friday, September 8, 2017 at 11AM at Zion Lutheran Church. Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 7, 2017 from 4-7PM at Halvorson Johnson Funeral Home – BRAINERD CHAPEL, and one hour prior to the service, Friday at the Church.
