Gary E. Wendt, age 76 of Staples, MN passed away on September 26th, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on June 15th, 1941 in Moorhead, MN, to Beatrice and Ernest Wendt. Gary was a two-tour veteran of the United States Army Security Agency (USASA), stationed in Chitose, Japan, with specialized training as a Morse Code intercept operator. Gary had many professions throughout his life including delivery-truck driver, work for the US Postal Office, and supporting the many entrepreneurial adventures of his family as the chief financial officer for computer technology research and development endeavors. After his retirement he pursued some of his many hobbies including bowling, horse racing, gambling, and spending time at his lake retreat with family and friends. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 55 years, Elaine; children, Shelli (Michael) Martin of Scott, AR, Dina (Chad) Wuornos of Big Lake, MN, and Rhonda (Russ) Ekholm of Staples, MN; grandchildren, Jeff (Chery Koran) Braun of Kimbolton, OH, Mike (Katie) Braun of Monticello, MN, Giselle (Justin) Hattesohl of Big Lake, MN, Corey Ekholm of Staples, MN, Kyle Ekholm of Staples, MN, and Sage Wuornos of Big Lake, MN; great grandchildren, Isaiah Braun, Shayla Braun, Dominic Braun, Joyce Braun, Finley Hattesohl, and Weylin Hattesohl; brothers, Ernest (Sadako) of Marietta, CA, Gordon of Isanti, MN, Dennis (Sharron) of Willmar, MN, Barry (Rebecca) of Las Vegas, NV, and Brian (Cathy) of East Bethel, MN. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 pm on October 1st, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Staples, MN. Pastor Robin Collins officiating. Family and friends are gathering one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will occur on a separate day, at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls, MN.
