Obituary for Edgar "Dick" Bender

Edgar "Dick" Bender
Edgar “Dick” Bender age 98, of Brainerd, passed away on Thursday, February 8, 2018 at Bethany-Good Samaritan Society. Dick was born on July 21, 1919 in Menno, South Dakota to Emanuel & Paulina (Rempfer) Bender. Dick was drafted in the Military, where he served in England with the 1684th ordinance until he was called to enter the Army Air Corp for which he had volunteered before being drafted. He worked his way up to Flight Officer and served until the end of WWII. He married Virginia Elvig on August 3, 1949, and together they were very active in their church. They traveled the country and sailed the seas in their 68 years together. Dick worked as an accountant for Crow Wing County Social Services. He was also a supervisor for the department, where several employees said, “he was the best boss they ever had.”
Dick was an ardent Christian and active in the First Presbyterian Church in Brainerd. He served as an Elder, church treasurer, choir member, Sunday school teacher of young men and adults, and then a Superintendent of Sunday School from 1949 -1960. During this time there was a big growth in Attendance which necessitated the building of a Sunday School addition. He was also in charge of the volunteer labor.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 68 years, Virginia; brother-in-law, Charles (June) Elvig; sisters-in-law: Marjorie Elvig and Martha Look; he was a beloved uncle to 10 nieces and nephews.
Dick is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Huldrich (Daisy); sisters: Hulda (August) Hauck, Anna Bender; parents-in-law, Henry & Loleta Elvig; brother-in-law, Rev. James Elvig; nephews: Don Hauck and Lawrence Look.
A funeral service for Dick will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 11AM at 1st Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, Saturday at the church. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery.
