Evelyn M. Adams passed away June 19, 2018, at the age of 102. Evelyn was born October 12, 1915 in Turtle Creek Township south of Staples to Hayden and Lois (Hanley) Tyrrell. At the age of 13 she and her sister Ruth, age 12, rented a room in Staples so they could attend high school.
In her youth summers were spent planting, hoeing, and picking acres of strawberries, raspberries, melons, and cucumbers. The most longed for day of the year was the first killing frost which ended the picking of cucumbers!
Following high school Evelyn attended Normal Training and started her teaching career in a rural school near Cushing, MN. She furthered her education at St. Cloud Teachers College. World War II took her to the Army Air Force Base at Chanute field in Illinois where she taught blue print reading and basic electricity to soldiers for three years during the war. In the 60s she received a bachelor’s degree from Bemidji State. The many places she taught included District 38 in Meeker County, Aldrich, Verndale, and many years in Staples. She retired from teaching in 1978 and spent many winters in Texas. Some were spent close to her two sisters Ruth (Orville) Thiel, and Vernice (Wilbur) Parliament, who also spent some winters in Texas.
Evelyn married Elmer Adams on March 19, 1945 in Rantoul, Illinois. They have one son, Dale (Susan) Adams of Aldrich; and one grandson, Michael Adams of Fargo, ND.
Evelyn loved to travel and has been in all 50 states as well as many foreign countries including Austalia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Israel, Egypt, Iraq, and others. She spent some time helping in a school in Puerto Rico. Evelyn enjoyed spending time with family and church activities. She was a life long member of the Church of Christ starting in Batavia, Turtle Creek Township, then in Staples.
A Funeral Service for Evelyn will be held 11:00 am on Monday, June 25, 2018, at the Church of Christ in Staples with Pastor Barry Klein officiating. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment for Evelyn will be at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls.
