Obituary for Mike Grittner

Mike  Grittner
Mike Grittner, age 56, of Pillager, passed from this life in to heaven on April 7,2018 after a long battle with cancer. He was born in St. Paul on July 21, 1961 to Mary Bernadette (Keating) and Gene Grittner.
Mike grew up working on family dairy and pig farms in his younger years. Mike was a jack of all trades. Mike’s career started as an ironworker in St. Paul. He married Lori L. Essington on August 6, 1983. They raised Tim and Luke at their home in Pillager MN. He became a self-employed carpenter in 1984 and retired early in 2016. He invented several carpentry tools to help with different methods to ease the carpentry toolbox - none were ever patented. Mike enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and gardening with family. He had an interest in and collection of meteorites, agates, and burl woods.
Growing up on a farm taught him work hard, to be creative, and to work with what you had on hand. He had a make due kind of attitude to which followed him for the rest of his life. He enjoyed learning and reading the Bible, writing songs and poems.
Mike will be deeply missed by his wife, Lori; sons, Tim of Brainerd, and Luke (Kayla) of Fargo; mother, Bernie Wartner of Motley; siblings, Shelly Juergen, Trisha Keating, Linda Smith, Mary Hall, Jonna Riggs, Lorrie Keppers, Jeryl Mertens, Robin Bauer, Jody Bade, Tim Lewis, Jerry Wartner, Barry Wartner, Julie Olivier, and Brenda Hove; sister-in-law, Lisa (Joe) Des Marais; brother-in-law, Jim (Theresa) Essington.
He is preceded in death by his father, Gene; and stepfather, Hubert Wartner.
A Funeral service for Mike will be held 11:00 am on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at Motley Free Methodist Church in Motley, MN. Pastor Jim Johnson will be officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 9:00-11:00am also at the church. Pallbearers will be Tim Grittner, Luke Grittner, Jim Essington, Joe Des Marais, Jerry Wartner, Zack Smith, Bill Newman, Matt Hall. A private family Interment will be at the Wildwood Cemetery in Pillager.
