Elaine was born April 2, 1934 to Andrew and Margaret (Jensen) Winter in Wadena County. She married Richard Mertens August 13, 1951 and had 4 children. Later she married Prosper Cherro on April 25, 1997.
Elaine was a very creative and talented seamstress (from mending to creating wedding and Christening gowns). Additionally, she did embroidery and was an avid quilter. She spent a tremendous amount of time creating beautiful things for others. In her lifetime she completed over 500 quilts for friends and family. She also was generous and donated many of her creations for various benefits. For example, she did a special project (donating numerous lap quilts) for Veterans at the VA. Elaine was not only creative with her sewing projects but was also known as the family storyteller. She remembered fun details and enjoyed passing along family history like no one else could. She was an avid reader throughout her entire life.

Elaine is survived by four children, Steven Mertens of Staples, Patty (Charlie) Schroeder of Little Falls, Daniel Mertens of Pelican Rapids, and Julie (Clark) Dahl of Staples.

She has six grandchildren, Janine (Thom) Paxson of St. Cloud, Amy (Jim) Olafson of Eagan, Kris (Ali) Mertens of Otsego, Andy (Sara) Mertens of Rice, Jessi (Pat) Mertens of Staples, and Lacey Fellman of Staples.
Elaine was blessed with 11 greatgrandchildren, Olivia, Gabriella, Ayla, Lyza, Rudy, Conner, Rylan, Brekken, Kinsley, Ariya and Brinley.

She was also survived by siblings, Lauraine Ulik, Janette (Jim) Lee, Betty (Paul) Wicht, Rodney Winter, Shelly Morton, and Linda Busche. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Richard and Prosper, one stillborn daughter, brother Dwaine and sister-in-law Fran, and brother-in-law Ray Ulik.
